About Andy Pafko

A versatile right-handed hitter from Boyceville, Wisconsin, Andy Pafko (1921-2013) was signed out of the Northern League by Eau Claire in 1940 and climbed through the minors, batting .356 for the Los Angeles Angels before reaching the majors with the Chicago Cubs in September 1943. Over 17 seasons he played for the Cubs (1943-1951), Brooklyn Dodgers (1951-1952), and Milwaukee Braves (1953-1959), primarily as an outfielder though he manned third base for the Cubs in 1948. A five-time All-Star (1945 and 1947-1950), Pafko hit .285 for his career with 213 home runs and 976 RBI; his best years included a .312, 26-homer, 101-RBI campaign in 1948 and a career-high 36 home runs in 1950, and he finished fourth in the 1945 NL MVP vote after driving in 110 runs and reaching the World Series with the Cubs. Nicknamed "Handy Andy" by a minor-league manager for his versatility, he is also remembered as the Dodgers' left fielder who watched Bobby Thomson's 1951 "Shot Heard 'Round the World" clear the wall. Traded to the Braves partly as a Wisconsin gate attraction, Pafko capped his career with Milwaukee's 1957 World Series championship over the Yankees. This #312 card falls in the tougher fourth-series high-number run of the 1956 Topps set.
