About Jack Crimian

Jack Crimian (John Melvin Crimian), a right-handed pitcher born February 17, 1926, in Philadelphia, signed with the Phillies in 1944, served in the U.S. Army in 1945, and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals after a strong 1946 with the Class B Wilmington Blue Rocks. He debuted for the Cardinals on July 3, 1951, and pitched parts of 1951-52 in St. Louis before a long, productive minor-league stretch. His signature season came in 1955 with the International League's Toronto Maple Leafs, where he went 19-6 with a 2.10 ERA and 16 complete games and was named the league's Pitcher of the Year, prompting the Kansas City Athletics to acquire him that October. Crimian pitched the entire 1956 season for the last-place A's, appearing in 54 games (seven starts) and going 4-12 with three saves; his highlight was a September 4, 1956, complete-game win over Cleveland in which he outdueled 20-game winner Herb Score. He closed his big-league career with Detroit in 1957, finishing 5-9 with a 6.36 ERA over 74 games. Not a Baseball Hall of Famer, he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. This 1956 Topps card (#319), a fourth-series high number, is his rookie card.
