About Lou Berberet
A left-handed-hitting catcher born November 20, 1929 in Long Beach, California, Lou Berberet starred as a three-sport athlete before attending the University of Santa Clara on a football scholarship, then signed with the New York Yankees for a $21,000 bonus from scout Joe Devine. After minor-league stops (beginning at Binghamton in 1950) and two years of U.S. Army service, he debuted for the Yankees on September 17, 1954. Berberet spent seven big-league seasons (1954-1960) with the Yankees, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, playing his fullest years in Washington after a February 1956 trade. Regarded as a very solid defensive catcher, in 1957 he handled 397 chances without an error for a 1.000 fielding percentage, becoming only the third catcher in major-league history with zero errors in more than 350 chances; that season he also delivered a pinch-hit, two-run walk-off homer off Hall of Famer Early Wynn. He retired after 1960 with a .230 average, 31 home runs and 153 RBI, and died April 6, 2004 in Las Vegas. This high-number rookie card (#329, Series 4) captures him during his standout Senators tenure.
