About Jim Busby
Jim Busby was a swift, superb-fielding center fielder signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1948 after he led his Texas Christian University conference with a .509 average. Born in Kenedy, Texas in 1927, he debuted with the White Sox on April 23, 1950 and played 13 major-league seasons through 1962 for the White Sox, Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Houston Colt .45s. A center fielder prized for his range, he twice led American League outfielders in putouts (1953-54) and posted a career .988 fielding percentage. He was named to the 1951 American League All-Star team and enjoyed his best years in 1953 (.312) and 1954 (.298), and Senators fans twice voted him their most popular player. Over 1,352 games he batted .262 with 1,113 hits, 48 home runs, 438 RBI and 97 stolen bases. His 1956 Topps card shows him with the Indians, whom he joined in 1956; that July 5-6 he hit grand slams in back-to-back games, one of the few AL players ever to do so. He later spent nearly three decades in the majors as a coach and died in 1996.
