About Warren Hacker
Warren Louis Hacker was a right-handed pitcher born November 21, 1924, in Marissa, Illinois. He reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs on September 24, 1948, fresh from three years of service with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II. Hacker spent the bulk of his career in Chicago (1948-1956) before later stops with the Cincinnati Redlegs (1957), Philadelphia Phillies (1957-1958), and Chicago White Sox (1961). His finest season came in 1952, when he went 15-9 with a 2.58 ERA, tossed 12 complete games and five shutouts, and led the National League in WHIP (.946), a performance that earned him 23rd place in the NL Most Valuable Player voting. Over 12 big-league seasons he compiled a 62-89 record with a 4.21 ERA, 557 strikeouts, and 17 saves. After his playing days he stayed in the game as a minor-league pitching coach, working in the Oakland Athletics organization from 1967 to 1971 and later with the San Diego Padres system through much of the 1970s. This card (#282) is a Series 4 high number, one of the tougher-to-find cards in the 1956 Topps set. Hacker died in 2002 in Lenzburg, Illinois.
