1958 Topps #473 Bill Renna

About Bill Renna
Renna came back to the majors with Boston after a 1957 spent with the San Francisco Seals. He appeared in 39 games, mostly pinch-hitting and filling in for Ted Williams in left, and hit .268 with four home runs and 18 RBI, including a pinch-hit homer at Washington on May 14. His 1958 Topps #473 card, with the Red Sox, comes from the sixth series, listed between Joe Jay and Ray Semproch.
Bill Renna was a 6-foot-3, 218-pound right-handed outfielder from Hanford, California. He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific, then starred in baseball and football at Santa Clara, where coach Paddy Cottrell tipped off the Yankees. Signed for $5,000 in 1949, he hit .385 with 21 home runs for Twin Falls in the Pioneer League that summer. Teammates there called him "Bull" because he was a big guy, according to his manager Charlie Metro. He reached New York in 1953 and hit .314 in 61 games, but was part of an 11-player trade to the Athletics that winter. His busiest year was 1954 in Philadelphia: 123 games, 13 home runs, 53 RBI, and the most double plays by an American League right fielder. He moved with the franchise to Kansas City, was traded back to the Yankees in June 1956, and went to Boston in March 1957. After a year with the San Francisco Seals, he returned to the majors with the 1958 Red Sox as a Ted Williams backup. His big-league career closed in May 1959 with a .239 average, 28 home runs and 119 RBI in 370 games. He later worked in concrete sales in San Jose and died there in 2014.
