1958 Topps #474 Ray Semproch

About Ray Semproch
Ray Semproch's 1958 Topps card is #474, a rookie card in the sixth and final series, just ahead of the All-Star subset, and it pictures him with the Philadelphia Phillies. It reports his 1957 season, when the right-hander went 12-4 with a 2.64 ERA for Triple-A Miami. He made his major league debut on April 15, 1958.
Roman Anthony Semproch, a right-handed pitcher from Cleveland, was the top rookie pitcher in baseball for one summer. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1951, he lost two years to the Marine Corps and did not reach the majors until April 15, 1958, at age 27. Armed with a sinker he learned in the minors, he went 13-11 with a 3.92 ERA and 12 complete games, leading all rookie pitchers in wins, complete games and innings pitched. Asthma dogged him and the magic did not last: he fell to 3-10 with a 5.40 ERA in 1959, and Philadelphia traded him to Detroit that December with Chico Fernandez. He was 3-0 in 17 relief outings for the Tigers before a June 1960 deal with the Dodgers for Clem Labine sent him to Triple-A Spokane; he never wore a Dodgers uniform. Washington's new expansion club claimed him that November, the Angels bought him the following April, and a spring back injury ended his career after two relief appearances. He finished 19-21 with a 4.42 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 85 games, then managed the bar at Broglio's, his family's restaurant in Independence, Ohio. He died October 27, 2024, at 93.
