About Bob Rush

Rush opened 1958 with a new club after the December 1957 trade that sent him from the Cubs to the defending champion Braves. He went 10-6 with a 3.42 ERA, starting 20 of his 28 games with five complete games and two shutouts. He started Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium and lost 4-0. His 1958 Topps #313 card shows him with Milwaukee, in the fourth series, following the Red Sox team card.

Bob Rush was a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher from Battle Creek, Michigan, raised in South Bend, Indiana. After combat service in Germany with Patton's Third Army, he reached the Chicago Cubs in 1948 after one minor-league season. For ten years he was the workhorse of poor Cub teams that never had a winning record, averaging about 222 innings a season after his rookie year. He lost 20 games in 1950, an All-Star year, and in 1952 went 17-13 with a 2.70 ERA and made a second All-Star team, earning credit for the National League win when rain ended the game. A heavy sinking fastball and a willingness to knock hitters down were his trademarks. Traded to Milwaukee in December 1957, he finally reached the postseason with the 1958 Braves. In 1959 he threw scoreless relief in the playoff with the Dodgers before the pennant-deciding run scored on an error. He finished 127-152 with a 3.65 ERA, 118 complete games and 16 shutouts, and died in Mesa, Arizona, in 2011.
