1958 Topps #247 Casey Wise

About Casey Wise
Wise spent 1958 with the Milwaukee Braves, sent down early and recalled in July after Red Schoendienst broke a finger, then filling in at second and short as the club won its second straight pennant. He hit .197 in 31 games and had one World Series at-bat, a pinch-hit strikeout. His #247 in the 1958 Topps set, a third-series card, shows him as a Brave.
Kendall Cole Wise, called Casey from his initials K.C., was an infielder born in Lafayette, Indiana, the son of longtime baseball scout Hughie Wise. The Cubs outbid the Braves for him in 1952, and after a strong 1956 with the Pacific Coast League champion Los Angeles Angels he arrived in Chicago touted as a top prospect. His four major league seasons, 1957 to 1960 with the Cubs, Milwaukee Braves and Detroit Tigers, were a rollercoaster: he was sent to Triple-A every year and hit .174 in 126 games. His best day came on April 24, 1960, when he homered twice for Detroit. He left the majors, later earned dental and orthodontic degrees at the University of Tennessee, and in 1968 became the first orthodontist in Naples, Florida, where he practiced until 1991.
