1958 Topps #248 Herm Wehmeier

About Herm Wehmeier
Wehmeier's 1958 Topps card, #248, shows him as a St. Louis Cardinal and sits in the third series between Casey Wise and Ray Moore. The season it heralds went badly: after three Cardinal appearances he was put on waivers to Detroit, missed a month with a sore elbow and pitched only seven times for the Tigers. It followed a 1957 in which he opened the Cardinals' season and beat his old Cincinnati club.
Herm Wehmeier was a right-handed pitcher from Cincinnati who signed with his hometown Reds out of Western Hills High School and reached the majors as an 18-year-old in 1945. Over 13 seasons he pitched for the Reds, Phillies, Cardinals and Tigers, finishing 92-108 with a 4.80 ERA and 794 strikeouts in 1,803 innings. In Cincinnati he was a favorite target of Crosley Field boo-birds, and wildness was part of the trouble: he led the National League in walks three times, in wild pitches twice and in earned runs allowed once. Sold to the Phillies in 1954, he pitched better for Philadelphia and St. Louis, and on the next-to-last day of 1956 he went 12 innings against Milwaukee, allowing only a first-inning homer, as the Cardinals beat Warren Spahn and the Braves in extra innings during a pennant race. A sore elbow ended his career at 32. He later worked in the trucking industry and died in 1973 at age 46 while testifying at a trial in Dallas.
