About Eddie Mathews

Edwin Lee Mathews (1931-2001) signed with the Boston Braves in 1949, just after his high-school graduation, and reached the majors in 1952. A left-handed-hitting third baseman, he is the only player to appear for the Braves in all three of their home cities-Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta (1952-1966)-and later played for the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers. Mathews led the National League in home runs in 1953 and 1959 and twice finished MVP runner-up. He won World Series titles with the 1957 Braves and 1968 Tigers and retired with 512 home runs, then the sixth-most in history and a record for a third baseman. Batting alongside Hank Aaron, he formed the most prolific home-run-hitting teammate duo ever, the pair combining for 863. A perennial All-Star and cornerstone of Milwaukee's back-to-back 1957-58 pennant winners, Mathews was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1978.
