Rufus James Marshall, born May 25, 1931 in Danville, Illinois and raised in Southern California, was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder who reached the majors in 1958 with the Baltimore Orioles after a long apprenticeship in the Pacific Coast League, where he led the circuit with 31 home runs and 123 RBIs for the 1954 Oakland Oaks and paced it with 188 hits for Vancouver in 1957. Baltimore sold him to the Chicago Cubs on August 23, 1958, and he greeted his new club with three home runs in a doubleheader at Wrigley Field the next day. He set major league career highs in 1959 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs in 294 at-bats. Over five seasons through 1962 he also played for the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates, mostly as a backup first baseman and pinch hitter, finishing at .242 with 206 hits and 29 home runs in 410 games. He then spent three seasons in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons, hitting 78 home runs. Marshall later managed the Cubs from 1974 to 1976 and the Athletics in 1979, and closed out a long career with the Diamondbacks as a Pacific Rim advisor. He died September 7, 2025 at 94.
