1958 Topps #322 Harding Peterson

About Harding Peterson
Card #322, a rookie card, was printed in the fourth series of a 494-card set. It shows Peterson with the Pittsburgh Pirates, though his 1958 major league time was only two games in early May; he spent the year with Lincoln, Salt Lake City and Columbus. His 1957 was the peak of his playing days: he hit .301 in 30 games and played in the final games at Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds.
Harding Peterson, known as Hardy while he played, was a right-handed catcher from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, who starred at Rutgers, earning second-team All-America honors in 1950 on a team that finished third in the College World Series. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates that year, beginning a 35-year run with the organization. A two-year Army stint during the Korean War and a badly broken right forearm suffered in an August 1955 home-plate collision with the Cubs' Jim Bolger cost him seasons, and he appeared in 66 major league games from 1955 to 1959, hitting .273 with three home runs. He played in the final games at both Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds in September 1957. Turning to management, he skippered Pirates farm clubs, then directed the farm system and scouting from 1968. When Joe L. Brown retired after 1976, Peterson took over the baseball side, trading for manager Chuck Tanner, and he became general manager in January 1979 as the Pirates won the World Series. He was fired in 1985, served as Yankees general manager in 1990, and scouted until 1995. He entered the Kinston Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Rutgers Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.
