1958 Topps #454 Harry Hanebrink

About Harry Hanebrink
Hanebrink's 1958 was the only one of his 14 professional seasons spent entirely in the majors, and he played 63 games for Milwaukee, hitting .188 with four home runs and ten RBI. One came June 15 in St. Louis, his hometown, a ninth-inning two-run shot that beat the Cardinals 4-2. Topps #454 in Series Six is his rookie card, showing him with the Braves, who lost the World Series to the Yankees in seven games.
Harry Aloysius Hanebrink was born in St. Louis in 1927, served in the Navy in World War II, and signed with the Boston Braves organization, starting in 1948 at Eau Claire. A left-handed hitter with a wide, rhythmic batting stance, he was nicknamed The Stance by teammates at Atlanta. He reached the majors with Milwaukee in 1953, the club's first season there, then spent years in the minors at Toledo and Wichita before returning in late 1957. A utility man at second, third and the outfield corners, he played for the pennant-winning 1957 and 1958 Braves and the 1959 Phillies. Over four seasons and 177 games he hit .224 with six home runs. After baseball he worked in St. Louis real estate and drove an airport shuttle. He died in Bridgeton, Missouri, in 1996.
