About Tom Qualters

Qualters split 1958 between the Phillies and the White Sox, going 0-0 with a 4.20 ERA over 27 games and 45 innings, and his 1958 Topps card #453 shows him with Chicago. It sits in the sixth series, the last run of base cards before the Sport Magazine All-Star subset that starts at #475.

Tom Qualters was a right-handed pitcher from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, signed out of high school by the Philadelphia Phillies for $40,000 as a bonus baby. He debuted on September 13, 1953, and allowed six earned runs while retiring one batter, an ERA of 162.00. He then sat on the Phillies roster for two years without pitching again, which earned him the teammate nickname Money Bags. After two years in the International League he made brief returns to Philadelphia, then finished with the Chicago White Sox in 1958. His final game came on September 25, 1958. He pitched in the minors, mostly Triple-A, through 1962. In 34 games he never had a major league decision, and he is the only pitcher to appear on a Topps baseball card four times without a win or loss. Later he worked as a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission enforcement officer.
