1958 Topps #455 Hal Griggs

About Hal Griggs
Hal Griggs is #455 in the 1958 Topps set, a Series Six rookie card showing him with the Washington Senators. The season it reflects was his busiest: 32 games, 21 of them starts, 137 innings, 69 strikeouts and a 3-11 record with a 5.52 ERA. Authors Boyd and Harris later ran this card in their card-collecting book with a blunt caption.
Hal Griggs, a right-handed pitcher born in Shannon, Georgia, was named for silent film star Harold Lloyd. After a Coast Guard stint he was a bellhop in Miami when a minor league owner invited him to try out; he had never played organized baseball but made the Hickory Rebels in 1950. He led the Western Carolina League with 195 strikeouts in 1952, the year he married on the Hickory pitcher's mound, quipping that he could not hit, so there was no sense marrying at home plate. He pitched for the Washington Senators from 1956 to 1959 on cellar-dwelling clubs and went 6-26 with a 5.50 ERA. In 1957 he ended Ted Williams's record streak of consecutive times on base. His last win, a 7-0 two-hitter at Yankee Stadium on May 9, 1959, struck out Mickey Mantle. A clubhouse prankster, he pitched in the minors through 1963, was listed as a missing ballplayer in 1993, and died in Tucson in 2005.
