1958 Topps #451 Joe Taylor

About Joe Taylor
Taylor's #451 is a rookie card, in the sixth and final series of the 494-card set, and shows him with the St. Louis Cardinals, who got him with Curt Flood from Cincinnati in a December 1957 trade. He opened 1958 at Omaha, was recalled in late May and hit .304 in 23 at-bats, then was claimed on waivers by Baltimore on July 25.
Joe Taylor was a right-handed outfielder born in Chapman, Alabama, and raised in Pittsburgh, whose 18-year semipro and professional career produced 119 major league games over four seasons. He started in semipro ball in 1946 and played in the Negro leagues from 1949 to 1951 before entering organized baseball. In 1954 he was an International League All-Star, hitting .323 with 23 home runs for Ottawa, which earned a call-up to the Philadelphia Athletics. He later put together strong Pacific Coast League seasons, including All-Star selections, and reached Cincinnati in 1957. He played for the Redlegs, Cardinals, Athletics and Orioles, batting .249 with nine home runs and 31 runs batted in. His last major league game came on July 21, 1959. Scouts and managers praised his quick hands and raw power, while off-field troubles limited his big league time. He kept playing in the high minors in the United States and Mexico through 1963, and he also played winter ball in Venezuela.
