1958 Topps #432 John Powers

About John Powers
Powers played a career-high 57 games for Pittsburgh in 1958, batting .183 with two home runs. His Topps card #432 carries the Pirates name and comes from the fifth series of the 494-card set, a recognised rookie card in a year when the Pirates were his only big-league club.
John Powers was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Birmingham, Alabama, who reached the majors in September 1955 and played parts of six seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians. His big-league line was modest, a .195 average over 151 games and 215 at bats, but in the minors he was a feared slugger. He hit 39 home runs for the Class B Waco Pirates in 1950 and 39 more for the Double-A New Orleans Pelicans in 1956, and finished with 298 minor league homers between 1949 and 1965. He stood 6 feet 1 inch and threw right-handed. Powers died in Birmingham in 2001 at age 72.
