Rookie CardStarCorrected

Pancho Herrera ROOKIE CARD, famous for a progressive front-nameplate error. The corrected card reads 'HERRERA'; error copies show the last letters dropping off ('HERRER', then 'HERRE', then 'HERR') from a print blockage. PSA and SGC recognize a single 'Herrer' error plus the corrected card; Beckett tracks the finer degrees.

This is the corrected "HERRERA" nameplate — the common version of #433. Error copies drop the trailing letters (HERRER, then HERRE, then HERR) from a progressive print blockage; see the variation guide below.

About Pancho Herrera

Pancho Herrera-born Juan Francisco Herrera in Santiago de las Vegas, Cuba, in 1934-was a first baseman whom the Philadelphia Phillies purchased from the Negro American League's Kansas City Monarchs in 1954. He debuted briefly with Philadelphia in 1958, then won the International League's Triple Crown and MVP with the Buffalo Bisons in 1959 before returning to the Phillies for 1960-1961, becoming one of the first Afro-Latino players in franchise history. In 300 major-league games he batted .271 with 31 home runs and finished runner-up for the 1960 National League Rookie of the Year. Herrera is best remembered by collectors for a 1958 Topps printing error that dropped the final letter of his surname, leaving it misspelled as "Herrer"-a scarce mistake prized in the hobby. He later continued a lengthy minor-league career and died in Miami in 2005.
