About Pancho Herrera
Topps #433, from the fifth print series, is Pancho Herrera's rookie card. He made the Phillies' Opening Day roster in 1958 but went hitless in 11 at-bats and was back at Miami by May. Recalled in September, he hit his first big-league home run off Bill Henry and finished at .270. Collectors prize the nameplate error, where letters drop off the end of HERRERA and the first stage reads HERRER.
Juan Francisco Herrera Villavicencio, the Cuban-born first baseman known in the United States as Pancho or Frank, played parts of three major league seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies (1958, 1960-1961). Born June 16, 1934 in Santiago de las Vegas, near Havana, he signed his first professional contract in Cuba in 1950 and was picked up in 1952 by the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League, where he caught alongside Ernie Banks and was chosen for the 1953 East-West All-Star Game. The Phillies purchased him from the Monarchs in 1954, making him the first Afro-Latino to play for the club. He also played Cuban League winters for the Habana Lions and Cienfuegos, and won the 1959 International League Triple Crown and MVP award at Buffalo (.329, 37 home runs, 128 RBIs). Listed at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, he opened as a catcher, played third base for the 1958 Phillies, was tried at second base in 1960 and settled at first. He batted .271 with 31 home runs and 128 RBIs in exactly 300 major league games, and died in Miami on April 28, 2005. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in Miami in 1997 and the International League Hall of Fame in 2008.
