About Murray Wall

Wall's 1958 Topps card is #410, from the fifth series, and shows him with the Red Sox. He had come up from Dallas late in 1957. In 1958 he pitched in 52 games with a 3.62 earned run average, better than Boston's team mark of 3.92, and went 8-9 for the third-place club. His only career start came on June 11 against Detroit.

Murray Wesley Wall was a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Dallas who worked almost entirely in relief. After Navy service he starred at the University of Texas, was a collegiate All-American in 1949 and 1950 as the Longhorns won back-to-back College World Series titles, and signed with the Boston Braves in June 1950, debuting on July 4 with four innings against the Phillies. Then came years of minor league work with Milwaukee, Toledo, Atlanta and the Dallas Eagles before the Boston Red Sox bought his contract in August 1957. He pitched for the Red Sox from 1957 to 1959, with a brief 1959 stop in Washington that was reversed within days when a trade fell through. His major league line was 13-14 with a 4.20 earned run average in 91 games, one of them a start. After baseball he worked for a Dallas savings and loan, rising to vice president. He died in 1971, aged 45, and in 1980 was inducted into the Ex-Pro Baseball Players Hall of Fame in Dallas.
