1958 Topps #411 Tony Taylor

About Tony Taylor
The 1958 Topps #411 shows Tony Taylor as a Chicago Cub, in the fifth series, and is his rookie card. The card follows a 1957 spent at Double-A Dallas, where he hit .217 but drew praise as an excellent fielder and base-runner, before the Cubs took him in the Rule 5 draft. He never played another minor league game and opened 1958 as Chicago's leadoff man and second baseman.
Tony Taylor was a Cuban-born second baseman who spent 19 major league seasons, the bulk of them with the Philadelphia Phillies. He turned pro in 1954, came up through the New York Giants farm system, and jumped straight from the minors to the Chicago Cubs' starting second base job in 1958. Chicago sent him to Philadelphia with Cal Neeman in May 1960 for Don Cardwell and Ed Bouchee, and that summer he was named to the National League All-Star team, playing in both of the two All-Star Games staged that year, the only All-Star honor of his career. In Philadelphia he became the everyday second baseman and leadoff man, prized for his speed, steady glove and willingness to move to third base or first base when the roster needed it. He finished with a .261 average, 2,007 hits and 234 stolen bases, one of the most durable and popular Phillies of his era despite mostly losing teams. Traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1971, he returned to Philadelphia as a free agent for his final three seasons, then coached for the Phillies, Giants and Marlins across nearly three decades. He entered the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2002.
