Smith opened 1958 on the Pittsburgh roster, and the Pirates sold him to the Cubs on May 6. He got into 24 games between the two clubs and went 4-for-23, a .174 average, with one RBI and four appearances at first base. His last major league game came about a month after the sale, on June 7. Paul Leslie Smith was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder from New Castle, Pennsylvania, born in 1931. His hometown sat only about 50 miles from Pittsburgh, and he signed with the Pirates in 1950. His best big league season was his first, 1953, when he played 118 games and hit .283 with 110 hits, four home runs and 44 RBI. He then spent three seasons out of the majors before returning to Pittsburgh in 1957 as a reserve outfielder. The Pirates sold him to the Cubs on May 6, 1958, and he played his last major league game about a month later. In three seasons he appeared in 223 games with 152 hits in 562 at bats, a .270 average, including 16 doubles, seven triples and seven home runs. He played the rest of his career at the Triple-A level and retired after the 1963 season. Smith died in 2019.
