1958 Topps #270 Warren Spahn

About Warren Spahn
Warren Edward Spahn (1921-2003) signed with the Boston Braves and debuted in 1942, then missed three seasons as a U.S. Army combat engineer in World War II, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star at the Battle of the Bulge and the Remagen bridge. Returning in 1946, the left-hander won 363 games-the most by any southpaw in major-league history-against 245 losses, with a 3.09 ERA and 2,583 strikeouts over 21 seasons, mostly for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves (1942-1964). He recorded 13 seasons of 20-plus wins, was selected as an All-Star in fourteen seasons, led his league in victories eight times, won the 1957 Cy Young Award, and threw no-hitters at ages 39 and 40. Spahn anchored Milwaukee's 1957 World Series champions and 1958 NL pennant winners. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973, he is honored today by the Warren Spahn Award, given annually to the game's best left-handed pitcher.
