About Whammy Douglas

Douglas is pictured with the Pittsburgh Pirates on 1958 Topps #306, a rookie card from Series Four. It reflects his 1957 season: 11 games, eight starts, a 3.26 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 47 innings. That July 31 he slipped into the stands for the orange drink Bobby Bragan used to confront umpires.

Whammy Douglas, born in Carrboro, North Carolina, was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors despite losing an eye at age 11. His glass eye gave the look of an evil eye that seemed to put the whammy on batters, an apparent nod to the Li'l Abner character Evil Eye Fleegle, and the name stuck. He spent ten years in pro ball, with a minor-league record of 82-57, including a 27-6 season and a 2.06 ERA for Brunswick of the Georgia-Florida League in 1954. His only major-league season came with the 1957 Pittsburgh Pirates, when he went 3-3 with a 3.26 ERA over 11 games, eight of them starts. In January 1959 he was included in the trade that sent Frank Thomas from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati for Smoky Burgess, Harvey Haddix and Don Hoak, but he never pitched for the Reds. He played semi-pro basketball in the winter of 1953-54 for extra money.
