About Richie Ashburn

Richie Ashburn, nicknamed "Whitey" for his light-blond hair as well as "Putt-Putt" and "the Tilden Flash," was a superb defensive center fielder and elite contact hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1948 to 1959, a four-time All-Star and member of the 1950 "Whiz Kids" pennant winners. He won batting titles in 1955 (.338) and 1958, when he edged Willie Mays on the season's final day with a 3-for-4 performance to finish at .350 while also leading the league in hits, triples, walks, and on-base percentage. Ashburn's 5,803 career putouts rank third among center fielders in history, behind only Mays and Tris Speaker, and 82 percent of his 2,574 hits were singles, en route to a .308 career average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1995, with more than 15,000 fans attending the induction ceremony alongside fellow inductee Mike Schmidt. His 1959 Topps card comes from his final season as a Phillie before he was traded to the Cubs.
