About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps built #521 around something no stat line could carry: the two Los Angeles Dodgers pictured are brothers. Norm Sherry caught, Larry Sherry pitched, and when their turns lined up the club could send a family out as its battery - the pair first worked together on May 7, 1960, becoming the first Jewish brothers to serve as batterymates in the major leagues. That is what the Brother Battery title means, and it is why the two share one card rather than each taking a solo slot. For collectors it is a card from the sixth print series.

Norm Sherry - Dodgers and Mets catcher from 1959 to 1963, a career backup behind John Roseboro who is remembered less for his .215 bat than for the 1961 spring-training word that helped straighten out Sandy Koufax. Larry Sherry - right-handed reliever who became the first pitcher out of the bullpen to win World Series MVP, working all four Dodger wins in 1959; the slider his catcher brother Norm taught him carried him eleven seasons.
