About Bud Daley
Card #48 is the League Leaders card for American League games won in 1960, and it stacks Daley with Chuck Estrada, Jim Perry, Frank Lary, Milt Pappas and Art Ditmar. His 16 wins for a 58-96 Kansas City club put him third in the league. The grouping reads oddly in hindsight: Ditmar was the pitcher the Yankees sent to Kansas City with Deron Johnson on June 14, 1961, to get Daley. Card #422 is his last Topps card as an Athletic. He went 4-8 over 16 games before the deal, 8-9 in 23 games after it, and closed the pennant race with three complete-game wins in September.
Leavitt Leo "Bud" Daley was a left-handed pitcher who worked parts of ten big-league seasons between 1955 and 1964 for Cleveland, the Kansas City Athletics and the New York Yankees. Born in Orange, California, on October 7, 1932, he grew up in the hills outside San Diego and never played an organized game until he reached Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach. A birth injury left his right arm an inch shorter than his left and impossible to straighten, so he fielded almost everything backhand. He threw a knuckleball and curves at two speeds, and he chose Cleveland from a crowd of interested clubs because Indians star Bob Lemon was a fellow Wilson graduate. Traded to Baltimore and flipped to Kansas City within three weeks in 1958, he moved into the rotation and won 16 games in both 1959 and 1960, earning All-Star honors in each season. Kansas City sent him to New York in June 1961, and he finished the clinching Game Five of that year's World Series against Cincinnati as the winning pitcher. He died in Riverton, Wyoming, in 2024 at 92.
