1961 Topps #359 Dallas Green

About Dallas Green
Dallas Green's 1961 Topps card, #359, belongs to the set's fourth series and shows him with the Philadelphia Phillies. Behind it is his first big-league summer. Called up from Buffalo in mid-June 1960, he lost his debut at San Francisco on June 18, then beat the reigning World Series champion Dodgers 2-0 on three hits at Connie Mack Stadium ten days later and ran off four complete games in his first seven starts. He was in the bullpen by mid-August, and finished with 10 starts in 23 games, a 3-6 record, and a 4.06 ERA over 108 2/3 innings for a club that ended up last at 59-95.
Dallas Green pitched parts of eight big league seasons, from 1960 through 1967, for the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets, finishing 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 185 games. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from Newport, Delaware, he starred as a pitcher and right fielder at the University of Delaware, going 6-0 with an 0.88 ERA as a junior in 1955 before Phillies scout Jocko Collins signed him that summer. Arm and shoulder trouble that began at Buffalo in May 1959 followed him the rest of his playing days and kept him from matching his early promise, though he gave the Phillies steady work as a spot starter and long reliever while the club climbed from 47-107 in 1961 to a pennant race in 1964. Local legend in Delaware gave him the nickname Spider for his height and long arms. He became far better known after he stopped pitching, managing the 1980 Phillies to the first World Series title in franchise history and, as Chicago Cubs general manager, building the 1984 club that won the NL East. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member, though he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
