About Johnny Logan

Topps put Logan at #524 in the seventh series, a high number and one of the harder cards in the set to track down, since by 1961 he had been a big-league regular for most of a decade. The back sums up 1960, his last full year as Milwaukee's everyday shortstop: 136 games, 482 at-bats, 118 hits, seven home runs, 42 runs batted in and a .245 average. It closed the thirteenth season of a run at shortstop in Milwaukee that started with the American Association Brewers in 1948. That December the Braves traded for Roy McMillan, and Logan's days in Wisconsin were numbered.

Johnny Logan was born in Endicott, New York, on March 23, 1926, a five-sport star at Union-Endicott High School who was signed for the Boston Braves organization by scout Dewey Griggs. He reached the Braves in 1951, took over at shortstop for good in 1952, and moved with the franchise to Milwaukee in 1953. A four-time All-Star in 1955, 1957, 1958 and 1959, he had his best year in 1955, playing all 154 games, batting .297 and tying Hank Aaron for the National League lead with 37 doubles. He hit the first home run of the 1957 World Series, in a Game Two win over the Yankees, and doubled home the tying run in the tenth inning of Game Four before scoring on Eddie Mathews' game-winning homer. Traded to Pittsburgh on June 15, 1961 for Gino Cimoli, he closed a 13-season major league career in 1963 at .268 with 93 home runs and 547 RBI. One season in Japan with the 1964 Nankai Hawks made him the first player to win both a World Series and a Japan Series.
