The story on this card
Card 60 carries the 1961 National League strikeout leaders. Sandy Koufax topped the league with 269, breaking Christy Mathewson's 1903 modern-era NL record of 267 when he fanned Pancho Herrera on September 27 - the first of four strikeout crowns for the Dodgers left-hander, who went 18-13 that year. Teammate Stan Williams was second with 205, and Don Drysdale third with 182 after slipping to 13-10; Drysdale had led the majors in strikeouts in 1959 and 1960 and would again in 1962, so 1961 was the year two teammates passed him. Cincinnati's Jim O'Toole placed fourth with 178, going 19-9 with a 3.10 ERA for the pennant-winning Reds. The Dodger staff led baseball with 1,105 strikeouts.
Sandy Koufax was the Dodgers' left-hander nicknamed 'the Left Arm of God,' whose five-year run of dominance from 1962 to 1966 brought three unanimous Cy Young Awards and four no-hitters, including a perfect game, before an arthritic elbow forced his retirement at 30. "Big Daddy" Williams was a 6-foot-5 fireballer who won 109 games over 14 seasons with six teams, then built a long second career as a pitching coach who helped the Red Sox, Yankees, and Reds reach the World Series. Don Drysdale was the Dodgers' intimidating right-hander for 14 seasons, the 1962 Cy Young winner and a three-time World Series champion who in 1968 ran off six straight shutouts and a record 58 2/3 scoreless innings. Jim O'Toole was Cincinnati's left-handed workhorse of the early 1960s, a 19-game winner in the Reds' 1961 pennant season who started twice against Whitey Ford in that World Series and started the 1963 All-Star Game for the National League.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
