About Andre Rodgers

Card #477, a series-6 issue, covers Rodgers' first Chicago season: .266 in 73 games in 1961, and mostly not at shortstop. Ernie Banks was still the Cubs' shortstop, working 104 games there, so Rodgers spent 42 games spelling Ed Bouchee at first base and only 24 at his own position. The Cubs had gotten him from Milwaukee with Daryl Robertson for pitchers Moe Drabowsky and Seth Morehead.

Kenneth Andre Ian Rodgers was born December 2, 1934, in Nassau, Bahamas, and died there December 13, 2004. A standout cricketer who had never seen a baseball until 1952, he paid his own way to a 1954 New York Giants tryout and landed in their Melbourne, Florida camp under Carl Hubbell. He won the 1955 Northern League batting crown at St. Cloud at .387, then beat out Vada Pinson for the 1958 Pacific Coast League title at Phoenix. Rodgers debuted April 16, 1957, becoming the first Bahamian to play in the integrated major leagues. A 6-foot-3 right-handed shortstop, he played for the New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-1960), Chicago Cubs (1961-1964) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1965-1967), then spent 1969 with Japan's Taiyo Whales. He finished at .249 with 45 home runs and 245 RBIs in 854 games. Back home he ran Rodgers Sports Shop, managed the 1971 national team, and entered the inaugural Bahamas National Sports Hall of Fame class in 1989; Nassau's Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium now carries his name.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
