About Bob Miller

The expansion Mets took Miller from the Cardinals in the October 1961 draft, and his first New York season turned brutal: he lost his first twelve decisions, a start that stood as a Mets record until Anthony Young broke it in 1993, and finished 1-12 with a 4.89 ERA in 33 games. The lone win came in the next-to-last game of the year, a complete-game 2-1 victory at Wrigley Field. New York carried two pitchers named Bob Miller that season, and Casey Stengel sorted the roommates out as Lefty and Righty. Card 293 is the right-hander, Robert Lane Miller; the left-hander, Robert Gerald Miller, has his own card at 572. Number 293 sits in the fourth series.

Robert Lane Miller, born February 18, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri, was a right-handed pitcher who worked seventeen big league seasons between 1957 and 1974 and passed through ten different franchises, tying what was then the modern-era record. Born Robert Lane Gemeinweiser, he signed with his hometown Cardinals as a bonus baby out of Beaumont High School in June 1957 and debuted six days later at eighteen. After St. Louis came the Mets, Dodgers, Twins, Indians, White Sox, Cubs, Padres, Pirates, Tigers and a return to New York. He pitched for three World Series winners, the 1963 and 1965 Dodgers and the 1971 Pirates, and never allowed a run in a Series game for Los Angeles. Used first as a swingman and then almost entirely in relief, he finished 69-81 with 51 saves, 895 strikeouts and a 3.37 ERA in 694 games. He later managed Amarillo to a Texas League title, served as pitching coach for the expansion Blue Jays and held the same job with the Giants. He died August 6, 1993 of injuries from a car crash in Rancho Bernardo, California, while scouting for San Francisco.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
