About Bob Skinner

Card #115 lands in the second series, the stretch of the 1962 set collectors chase twice over: every number from #110 to #196 exists as a normal copy and as a lime-cast 'green tint,' the result of an overflow run Topps farmed out to a second printer whose plates came back wrong. The season on the back is a rough one. Skinner got into only 119 games in 1961, nagged by injuries all summer, and hit .268 with three home runs and 42 RBI as the defending champions slid to sixth place.

Bob Skinner was a 6-foot-4 left-handed hitter who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates out of San Diego Junior College in 1951, then lost two years to the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He debuted in 1954 as a first baseman, spent 1955 back in the minors, and moved to the outfield for good in 1957, when new manager Danny Murtaugh told him he was playing left field until he played his way out of it. He never did. Skinner hit .321 in 1958 and was picked for the All-Star Game in two seasons, starting both of the two games played in 1960. He was the regular left fielder on Pittsburgh's 1960 world champions, hit over .300 three times as a Pirate, and for more than seven years patrolled Forbes Field alongside Roberto Clemente and Bill Virdon. Traded to Cincinnati in 1963 and to St. Louis in 1964, he won a second ring off the Cardinals' bench. Twelve seasons left him at .277 with 1,198 hits and 103 home runs. He later managed the Phillies, coached four organizations including the 1979 champion Pirates, and joined San Diego's Breitbard Hall of Fame in 1976. He died in 2026 at 94.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
