About Dick Stuart

Card #160 sits in the 1962 set's second series, the run of cards numbered 110 through 196 that Topps reprinted at a second plant and that exists both with and without the famous green tint on the front. The photo caught Stuart at his peak: in 1961 he batted .301 with 35 home runs and 117 RBIs, the only time he hit .300 in the majors, and he made both National League squads in a season that carried two All-Star Games. He also led the league with 121 strikeouts and with 21 errors at first base.

Dick Stuart was a right-handed slugging first baseman who played in the majors from 1958 to 1969 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels, with two seasons in Japan for the Taiyo Whales in between. Born in San Francisco and raised in San Carlos, he turned down two college scholarships to sign with Pittsburgh in June 1951 for a $10,000 bonus out of Sequoia High School in Redwood City. In the minors he set a Western League record with 66 home runs for the 1956 Lincoln Chiefs, and he reached Pittsburgh in July 1958, homering in his first big league game. He was the Pirates' regular first baseman for the 1960 World Series champions, made both National League All-Star squads in 1961, and led the American League with 118 RBIs for Boston in 1963, the year he became the first player to hit 30 home runs in a season in both leagues. His bat never covered for his glove: he led his league in errors by a first baseman seven straight years, which brought the nicknames Dr. Strangeglove and Stone Fingers. He retired with 228 home runs, 743 RBIs and a .264 average.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
