About Chuck Schilling

Schilling turns up twice in the 1962 set. #345 is a fourth-series card with the Red Sox, and #467 belongs to the American League All-Star subset out of the sixth series - a Topps selection for the set, not an All-Star Game honor, which he never received. Both were printed on the strength of his first season, and then 1962 went wrong: a Gary Bell pitch broke his left hand on June 8 and cost him a month, and he finished at .230 in 119 games, although his seven home runs stood as a career high.

Charles Thomas Schilling (born October 25, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York) was a right-handed second baseman who spent all five of his major-league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, 1961 through 1965. Raised on Long Island, he graduated from St. Mary's High School in Manhasset in 1955 and signed with Boston while at Manhattan College, where he studied mechanical engineering. After a full 1960 season at Triple-A Minneapolis he reached the majors in 1961 with his friend and fellow Long Islander Carl Yastrzemski, and his glove was good enough that the Red Sox moved incumbent American League batting champion Pete Runnels off second base to make room. Prized for slick, dependable fielding rather than power, Schilling saw his bat undercut by a pitch that broke his left hand in his second season, and he closed his career with a .239 average, 470 hits, 23 home runs and 146 runs batted in over 541 games. He later taught secondary-school mathematics on Long Island for 24 years and died on March 30, 2021.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
