1962 Topps #301 Galen Cisco

About Galen Cisco
Card #301, a fourth-series issue, is Cisco's rookie card, and the season behind it began at Triple-A Seattle, where the 25-year-old went 6-1 with a 1.54 ERA for manager Johnny Pesky before Boston called him up. He debuted at Fenway Park on June 11, 1961 against Minnesota and was knocked around for five hits and five runs in 2 1/3 innings, then won a start against Washington six days later. By mid-July he was out of the rotation, and he closed the year 2-4 with a 6.71 ERA over 17 games, eight of them starts.
Galen Cisco was a right-handed pitcher who worked seven major-league seasons (1961-1965, 1967, 1969) after starring at Ohio State University, where he captained the Buckeyes' 1957 national championship football team and compiled a 12-2 record on the mound. Red Sox scout Denny Galehouse signed him in 1958, and he reached the majors in June 1961, pitching for Boston, the expansion-era New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals and finishing 25-56 with a 4.56 ERA in 192 games, 78 of them starts. His heaviest workloads came with the Mets, whose manager Casey Stengel nicknamed him "Ohio State." Cisco then built a far longer second career as a pitching coach, working nearly three decades in that job for the Royals, Expos, Padres, Blue Jays and Phillies. He ran the staff for Toronto's back-to-back World Series winners in 1992 and 1993, with Jimmy Key, Jack Morris and Duane Ward among the arms he handled there. Ohio State inducted him into its Varsity Hall of Fame in 1995.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
