1962 Topps #585 Glen Hobbie

About Glen Hobbie
Card #585 sits in the 1962 Topps seventh series, a short-printed high number from the run collectors finish last. It caught Hobbie coming off a 7-13, 4.26 season in 1961, his wins more than cut in half, though he struck out 103 and completed seven starts across 198 2/3 innings. He drew the Cubs' Opening Day assignment at Cincinnati, and on July 2 he hit two home runs off Al Cicotte of the Cardinals at Wrigley. Chicago finished seventh at 64-90 in the first College of Coaches season.
Glen Hobbie was a right-handed pitcher who spent nearly his entire big-league career with the Chicago Cubs. Born in Witt, Illinois, he reached the majors in September 1957, weeks after the Cubs bought his contract from Memphis of the Southern Association for $50,000. The 6-foot-2 Hobbie split 1958 between the rotation and the bullpen, going 10-6 with 16 starts in 55 appearances, then took a regular turn in 1959 and opened that April with the best game of his career, a one-hit 1-0 shutout of St. Louis that was perfect until Stan Musial doubled with two out in the seventh. He won 16 games in both 1959 and 1960, topping 230 innings each year, and in 1960 he also led the National League with 20 losses. A back injury in 1961 altered his follow-through and cost him his fastball, and he never got it back. Chicago traded him to the Cardinals for Lew Burdette on June 2, 1964; his last big-league appearance came seven weeks later and he finished the year in the minors. Over eight seasons he went 62-81 with a 4.20 ERA, 682 strikeouts, 45 complete games and 11 shutouts in 284 games. He later worked as a supervisor for a roller derby association in Litchfield, Illinois, and died in 2013 at 77.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #585 card?
It is card #585 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Glen Hobbie of the Chicago Cubs.
Why is #585 harder to find?
It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade. It is also a short print card (42 cards, all in 523-598). Printed in smaller quantity than the rest of the seventh series.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
