About Sammy Esposito

In 1962 Esposito got into 75 games but batted only 81 times, 17 of those appearances coming as starts at shortstop while Luis Aparicio rested. He hit .235 with 19 hits, one double, no home runs and four runs batted in, yet 17 walks lifted his on-base percentage to .367, better than 130 points above his batting average. Number 586 sits deep in the seventh series, among the short-printed high numbers that make the back end of the 1962 set so hard to finish, and it pictures him with Chicago.

Sammy Esposito was a utility infielder who spent parts of ten major league seasons (1952, 1955-1963) with the Chicago White Sox and, at the very end, the Kansas City Athletics. A three-sport star at Chicago's Fenger High School, he signed with the White Sox in August 1952 and debuted that September as the youngest player in the majors, then spent 1953 in the minors before an Army hitch kept him away until 1955. Third base was his main post, with regular work at shortstop and second, and he spent his prime as the reserve behind Hall of Famers Luis Aparicio and Nellie Fox, valued for his glove and his patience far more than his bat: .207 with 8 home runs and 73 RBI in 560 games, but a .330 on-base percentage. His signature year was 1959, when the White Sox won the American League pennant and he appeared in two games of the World Series the Dodgers took in six. He then coached North Carolina State for 21 seasons (1967-1987), going 513-253-4 with ACC titles in 1968, 1973, 1974 and 1975, and was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #586 card?

It is card #586 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Sammy Esposito of the Chicago White Sox.

Why is #586 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade. It is also a short print card (42 cards, all in 523-598). Printed in smaller quantity than the rest of the seventh series.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
