About Hal Naragon

Number 164 belongs to the second series of 1962 Topps, and it comes two ways, with the green tint and without, so a complete run at this one means chasing both states. The season it covers was the end: 24 games, 35 at-bats, eight hits, a .229 average, nine games behind the plate without an error, and a last appearance on August 5. The Twins released him on October 19, closing a ten-year career spent entirely in the American League, and this is his final card in Topps' run through the 1960s.

Harold Richard Naragon was born October 1, 1928, in Zanesville, Ohio, and moved to Barberton in the seventh grade when his family followed wartime work near Akron. He batted .444 as a senior for the Barberton Magics and signed with Cleveland in the spring of 1947, the year after Bill Veeck shook his father's hand on a promise at an open tryout. A left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing catcher with a strong arm and sure hands, he debuted for the Indians in September 1951, was drafted into the Marines and stationed at Quantico, and returned in 1954 to a 111-win pennant winner, catching one inning of Game Three before the Giants completed their sweep. His best year at the plate was 1955: .323 in 57 games. Cleveland traded him with Hal Woodeshick to Washington for Ed Fitz Gerald on May 25, 1959, and he moved with the franchise to Minnesota. Ten seasons left him a .266 hitter with 262 hits in 424 games. He coached the Twins bullpen, followed pitching coach Johnny Sain to Detroit, and shared the Tigers' 1968 world championship. He ran Barberton's only sporting goods store from 1974 to 1990 and died there August 31, 2019, at 90.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
