1962 Topps #9 Jim Davenport

About Jim Davenport
Card #9 in the 1962 Topps set, a series-one issue, reports Davenport's 1961 season: a .278 average, 121 hits, 12 home runs and a career-high 65 RBI in 137 games. It reached collectors just as he was opening the best year of his career, the one that brought his only All-Star selection, appearances in both of that summer's All-Star Games, and his lone Gold Glove.
James Houston Davenport won a football scholarship to Mississippi Southern College as a quarterback, hit .439 for the baseball team in 1954 and signed with the Giants after that season. He debuted on April 15, 1958, taking the franchise's first West Coast at-bat, a strikeout against Don Drysdale, and spent all 13 of his seasons in San Francisco. A sure-handed third baseman nicknamed "Peanut," a name his grandfather gave him as a child, he led National League third basemen in fielding percentage from 1959 through 1961 and played 97 consecutive errorless games from July 1966 to April 1968. His best season came in 1962: he played in both All-Star Games, won his only Gold Glove and helped the Giants to the National League pennant. He retired in 1970 with a .258 average, 77 home runs and 456 RBI, and his 1,130 games at third base are the most in Giants history. He managed the Giants for most of 1985 and belongs to the Mississippi and Alabama sports halls of fame.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
