About Joe Hicks

Card #428 is another fifth-series number - Hicks had already appeared in the 1961 set. He is a Senator here too, wearing 31 for a second year, and 1962 turned out to be the only season he spent start to finish on a big-league roster. The at-bats stayed scarce anyway: 102 games but only 174 at-bats, because 65 of those appearances were pinch-hit assignments and just 29 were starts in the outfield. Hicks disliked the role, saying he needed regular work to find a groove. He hit .224 with six home runs, and the Mets bought his contract that offseason.

William Joseph Hicks, born in Ivy, Virginia on April 7, 1933, was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder who hit .325 at the University of Virginia before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1953. Two years in the Army cost him the 1956 and 1957 seasons, and a winter in Nicaragua after 1958 brought him a wife, Antonia Moody, whom he married in Managua on New Year's Eve. He reached Chicago in September 1959, going 3-for-7 in a late-season look, spent 1960 almost entirely as a pinch hitter, then was left unprotected and taken 52nd overall by the expansion Washington Senators. Two Washington seasons later his contract went to the New York Mets, where he finished in 1963. His big-league line reads .221 with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs in 212 games, thin next to the .313 average and 107 homers he posted over eleven minor-league seasons. Hicks later served as Charlottesville's athletic director, taught the rulebook at clinics around Virginia, and umpired into his 70s. He died on December 2, 2023.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
