About John Goryl

Number 558 sits in the 1962 Topps set's seventh series, among the high numbers, which makes it the toughest of Goryl's three cards in this Topps decade to run down. Minnesota used him sparingly that season, and 37 appearances produced only 26 at-bats, most of his work coming as a pinch-hitter or pinch-runner. He managed five hits, two of them home runs, and finished at .192 in his first big-league season since 1959.

John Albert Goryl was born October 21, 1933, in Cumberland, Rhode Island, and signed with the Boston Braves as an amateur free agent in 1951. A right-handed infielder listed at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, he spent seven full seasons in the minors, passing through the Braves, Baltimore and Chicago Cubs chains, before debuting with the Cubs on September 20, 1957. He played 117 games over three seasons in Chicago (1957-59), mostly at second and third base, then was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 8, 1960, going west alongside Ron Perranoski, Lee Handley and $25,000 in the deal that brought Don Zimmer to Chicago. Two more years in the minors followed until Minnesota selected him from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 major league draft in November 1961, and he finished his playing days with the Twins in 1964. In all he batted .225 with 134 hits, 16 home runs and 48 RBIs in 276 big-league games. He later managed in the Twins farm system and coached third base for them, replacing Gene Mauch as Minnesota manager in August 1980 and finishing 34-38 as a big-league skipper. Decades of coaching and player-development work with Cleveland followed; he won the Mike Coolbaugh Award in 2012 and was elected to the Cleveland Guardians Distinguished Hall of Fame in 2024.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #558 card?

It is card #558 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing John Goryl of the Minnesota Twins.

Why is #558 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
