About John Schaive

Card #529 lands in the 1962 set's seventh series, a short-printed high number. It caught Schaive at the one stretch when he played regularly. With the Senators in only the second season of the expansion franchise's life, he appeared in 82 games, 49 of them at third base and six at second, and batted .253 with six home runs and 29 runs batted in. It was the best major league year he had, and by a wide margin: those six home runs were the only ones of his career, and the 29 runs batted in accounted for all but three of his career total.

John Edward Schaive, born February 25, 1934, in Springfield, Illinois, was a right-handed-hitting infielder who spent parts of five seasons in the American League. He signed with the Chicago White Sox organization in 1952 and led the Class D PONY League in four offensive categories in 1955, batting .333 for Erie, but two years of military service interrupted his climb toward the majors. He debuted with the original Washington Senators on September 19, 1958, and stayed through 1960, then landed with an entirely different Washington Senators franchise, the American League expansion club that took the city's place, after it selected him from the Minnesota Twins in the December 1960 expansion draft. A backup at second and third base, he closed his major league line at .232 with six home runs and 32 RBI in 114 games. Away from the majors he was a far more productive hitter, batting .291 across more than 1,100 minor league games, and he managed while still playing at Double-A York in 1963 and at Monterrey in the Mexican League in 1966. He died in Springfield on May 11, 2009, having helped found the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame and entered it as a charter member in 1991.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #529 card?

It is card #529 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing John Schaive of the Washington Senators.

Why is #529 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade. It is also a short print card (42 cards, all in 523-598). Printed in smaller quantity than the rest of the seventh series.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
