About Ken MacKenzie

1962 Topps #421 is MacKenzie's first card in New York Mets colors, a fifth-series number. The season it points to brought 42 appearances for the 40-120 expansion club, a 5-4 record and a 4.95 ERA over 80 innings, the only winning mark among the 17 pitchers Casey Stengel ran out that year. Forty-one of those outings came in relief. The other was the only start of his major league career.

Kenneth Purvis MacKenzie, born March 10, 1934 in Gore Bay, Ontario, was a Canadian left-hander who spent parts of six major league seasons with the Milwaukee Braves, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros between 1960 and 1965. A member of Yale's class of 1956, he captained the baseball team and took second-team All-Ivy honors in hockey before Milwaukee signed him as an amateur free agent on September 4, 1956; the Braves converted him into a reliever in 1959. He is best remembered as an original Met, New York having bought his contract on October 11, 1961, the day after the expansion draft. Across 129 games, all but one of them in relief, he went 8-10 with a 4.80 ERA, 142 strikeouts and five saves in 208.1 innings, and all eight of those wins came in a Mets uniform. On July 23, 1965 he, Claude Raymond and Ron Taylor became the first three Canadians to pitch for one club in the same game. He came back to Yale as a freshman coach in 1967, ran the varsity baseball program from 1969 through 1978, then worked in the alumni office until retiring in 1984. He died December 14, 2023 at his home in Guilford, Connecticut, at 89.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
