About Moe Thacker

Number 546 rides in the seventh series, the short-printed high numbers that came last and toughest in 1962, which makes it a far tougher find than a first-series common. The card marks the only year Thacker held a big-league roster spot start to finish. He set career highs with 65 games and 35 starts behind the plate, hit .187 with 20 hits and nine RBI, and did his steadiest work in the gear: one error in 254 chances for a .996 fielding mark, and 21 runners thrown out against 26 steals allowed. On October 17 the Cubs shipped him to St. Louis with George Altman and Don Cardwell for Larry Jackson, Lindy McDaniel and Jimmie Schaffer.

Morris Benton "Moe" Thacker was a right-handed catcher born May 21, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky. He signed with the New York Yankees in 1952 after graduating from duPont Manual High School, spent six years in that farm system, and was acquired by the Cubs, who recalled him from the Double-A Texas League in August 1958. He homered in the third at-bat of his debut game, off Philadelphia's Seth Morehead, then again two days later against Stu Miller of the Giants. Those were the only two home runs he ever hit in the majors. After a full year back in the minors in 1959, he split the Chicago catching with Sammy Taylor in 1960, then worked behind starter Dick Bertell, with Taylor and Cuno Barragan also ahead of him. He spent most of 1963 in the Cardinals organization, appeared in three games for St. Louis and made his final big-league appearance on July 14. A 13-season pro, the 6-foot-3 Thacker hit .177 with 46 hits and 20 RBI in 158 major league games before retiring in 1964. He died in his hometown of Louisville on November 13, 1997, at 63.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #546 card?

It is card #546 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Moe Thacker of the Chicago Cubs.

Why is #546 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade. It is also a short print card (42 cards, all in 523-598). Printed in smaller quantity than the rest of the seventh series.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
