1962 Topps #547 Don Ferrarese

About Don Ferrarese
On April 28, 1962, the Phillies traded Ferrarese to St. Louis for Bobby Locke and cash, and this card lists him with the Cardinals for what became his last big-league season. He worked strictly out of the bullpen - 43 relief appearances between the two clubs, none as a starter - and went 1-5 with a combined 3.27 ERA over 63.1 innings, 2.70 of it as a Cardinal. From May 13 to June 12 he reeled off nine scoreless relief outings covering 12.2 innings, and on June 22 at Philadelphia he hit the only home run of his career, a two-run shot off Jim Owens. He pitched for the last time on September 22. Card #547 is a seventh-series high number.
Donald Hugh Ferrarese, a left-handed pitcher born June 19, 1929, in Oakland, California, pitched in the majors from 1955 to 1962 for the Orioles, Indians, White Sox, Phillies and Cardinals, finishing 19-36 with a 4.00 ERA and 350 strikeouts. He graduated from Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California, enrolled at Saint Mary's College, and left after his freshman year to sign with his hometown Oakland Oaks in June 1948, three days before he turned 19; the Oaks sent him to Class C Stockton of the California League. Army service during the Korean War cost him the 1951 and 1952 seasons. Back with the Oaks in 1954 under manager Chuck Dressen, who taught him to throw his curve and helped his control, he won 18 games and struck out 184. Standing 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, Ferrarese debuted with Baltimore on April 11, 1955, worked as both starter and reliever, and grew into a left-handed specialist late in his career, holding lefty batters to a .214 average. He also had a memorable day at the plate, collecting three doubles in a game for Cleveland. Ferrarese died November 4, 2024, in Durango, Colorado, at age 95.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #547 card?
It is card #547 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Don Ferrarese of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Why is #547 harder to find?
It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
