About Johnny Keane
Card #198 is a manager card of Keane with the Cardinals, issued in Topps' third series. It caught him in his first full season in charge, after he took over from Solly Hemus at midseason in 1961. Working with general manager Bing Devine, he brought along the young core - Bob Gibson, Bill White, Curt Flood, Julian Javier - that would carry St. Louis two years later, though this club settled for 84-78 and sixth place, 17 1/2 games behind the pennant-winning San Francisco Giants. That October owner Gussie Busch added front-office legend Branch Rickey as a special consultant. Keane never played in the majors, so this is a manager-only issue.
John Joseph Keane was born November 3, 1911, in St. Louis, Missouri. He signed with the Cardinals organization in 1930 and spent his playing career as a shortstop in their farm system, never reaching the majors; a beaning at Houston in July 1935 fractured his skull and left him unconscious for six days. He turned to managing in 1938 and went 1,357-1,166 over seventeen seasons with Cardinals farm clubs before joining the big-league staff as third-base coach in 1959. Keane replaced Solly Hemus as Cardinals manager on July 6, 1961. In 1964 he guided St. Louis to the National League pennant and a seven-game World Series win over the New York Yankees, then stunned the club by resigning the day after the victory; the Yankees hired him four days later. The aging New York roster slid to a losing record in 1965, and the club fired him in May 1966 after a 4-16 start. He finished 398-350 as a major-league manager and died of a heart attack on January 6, 1967, at his Houston home, age 55.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
