About Bob Duliba

Card #149 is a series-2 Cardinals issue in two versions: 149a without the green tint and 149b with it, the color-shifted second printing of that series, the scarcer of the two, run off elsewhere when demand outran the order. It follows a 1961 spent entirely in the minors, 7-7 over 101 innings at San Juan and Charleston. Duliba was back in St. Louis by July, going 2-0 with two saves and a 2.06 ERA in 28 games, his best in any season he worked more than a dozen times.

Robert John "Ach" Duliba was born January 9, 1935, in Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania, the only Newport Township High School player ever to reach the majors. Cardinals scouts Pop Kelchner and Stan Brackenridge, there to see a teammate, watched him strike out 18 of 21 Nanticoke batters and signed him instead; manager Whitey Kurowski hung the nickname "Ach" on him at Peoria in 1954. After three Marine Corps years at Parris Island and in Hawaii, he went 8-5 at Triple-A Omaha alongside a young Bob Gibson and debuted for St. Louis on August 11, 1959. A right-hander who never started a big-league game in 176 appearances, he worked for the Cardinals, Angels, Red Sox and Athletics, finishing 17-12 with a 3.47 ERA, 14 saves and 129 strikeouts. His 1960 season ended July 10 in a crash outside Columbia, Missouri that killed three passengers he was driving to Ray Sadecki's wedding. He later taught history at Wyoming Area High School, coached baseball at Wilkes University, and died April 4, 2026, at 91.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
