About Wally Post

Card 148 sits in the 1962 set's second series, the run Topps had to reprint at an outside plant after the original plates were damaged. The reprint went out short of magenta, so the fronts of that whole series come two ways and collectors chase both states of Post here: 148a without the green tint and 148b with it. The season behind it opened memorably. On April 10, in the first regular-season game at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers walked Frank Robinson to get to Post, who answered with a three-run homer off Johnny Podres - the first home run hit in the new park. He finished at .263 with 17 home runs and 62 RBI in 109 games.

Walter Charles Post was a right-handed outfielder who played fifteen major-league seasons between his 1949 debut and 1964, most of them with Cincinnati. Born in Wendelin, Ohio, in 1929 and raised near St. Henry, he signed with the Reds at sixteen as a pitcher and moved to the outfield in the minors. He stuck in the majors for good in 1954 and became one of the hardest hitters in franchise history, pairing with Frank Robinson in a power tandem that carried Cincinnati's lineups of the 1950s and early 1960s. His best year was 1955: .309 with 40 home runs and 109 RBI, all career highs and the first 40-homer season by a right-handed Reds batter. In 1956 his 36 homers helped the club total 221 and tie the major-league team record. Fan ballot stuffing put him on the 1957 All-Star starting lineup until Commissioner Ford Frick removed him. He also played for the Phillies, the Twins and the Indians, and finished at .266 with 210 home runs, 172 of them for Cincinnati, and 699 RBI in 1,204 games. He later worked for his father-in-law's Minster Canning Company in Minster, Ohio, and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame elected him in 1965. He died in 1982 at fifty-two.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
